RELIGIOUS RECOGNITION

Historically, Girl Scouting has been committed to diversity, religious and otherwise, and a rich tapestry of religious beliefs is reflected in the Girl Scout membership. The Constitution of GSUSA states that “the motivating force in Girl Scouting is a spiritual one.” Realizing the benefits of collaboration with Girl Scouting, many faith-based groups have developed religious award programs that encourage Girl Scouts to become stronger members of their faith. These programs have been created by the national religious organizations/committees, not by GSUSA. They encourage girls and young women to become more active members in their own religious groups, and they encourage spiritual development by providing specific religious instruction. Girls who have completed the program can receive a pin that is approved for wear on the official Girl Scout uniform.

Participation in religious recognition is voluntary. Girls in a troop may or may not be of the same faith; therefore, it is recommended that girls work on their religious awards outside of the troop/group meeting. However, if one of the requirements is a service project, and all of the girls are working on their respective religious awards, they may choose to do a group project instead of working on their own. Leaders should provide information about available awards to interested girls, however, leaders are not required to mentor girls who pursue religious awards. A girl’s family and/or her religious counselor should help the girl meet the program’s requirements.
